If you're a maintenance supervisor, lab manager, or procurement person ordering electrical test instruments for the first time—or the tenth time—this checklist is for you. It covers the six steps I now run through before buying Megger insulation testers, clamp meters, pinless moisture meters, digital calipers, and similar gear.

Here's what to ask before picking a probe type:
- AC current only, or DC too? (Most clamp meters do both now, but not all.)

Step 3: Check Pinless vs. Pin-Type Moisture Meters (They're Not Interchangeable)
This mistake happened in September 2022. I ordered ten MO280 pinless moisture meters for a flooring contractor. The contractor's team did pinless scans, found nothing. Then they did a destructive pin test on a suspicious area—and found 18% moisture content. The MO280 only scans to a depth of about ¾ inch. For thicker flooring, or for measuring precise moisture distribution, you need a pin-type meter.
Quick breakdown:
- Pinless (non-invasive): Fast, no damage, good for broad surveys. Works on flat surfaces. Won't give you exact percentage in a pinpoint location.
- Pin-type: Slower, leaves small holes, but gives precise readings at specific depths.
To be fair, the MO280 is a solid tool for its intended use—screening large areas quickly. Just know its limitation. If your application says "verify moisture content below 1 inch," get a pin-type meter or at least confirm the pinless model's depth specification.
Step 4: Don't Assume "Insulation Tester" = "Megger" (Brand vs. Product)
Here's a common confusion point. "Megger" is a brand name, but it's also used generically to mean any insulation tester. Many people search "insulation testers" and buy the first option. But not all insulation testers are equal.
A megohm meter that can test transformer windings at 10kV is different from a handheld 250V-1000V model for cable testing. The upside was saving maybe $200 by going with a no-name brand. The risk was that the no-name unit failed calibration after three months. I keep asking myself: is that $200 worth potentially failing a safety audit?
Now my checklist asks:
- What voltage range do you actually need?
- Does it need to meet a specific safety standard (CAT III or CAT IV)?
- Is calibration certification required? (Some ISO 9001 projects mandate it.)
Step 5: Know Where to Buy—Especially for Mitutoyo

Step 6: Factor in Total Cost (Not Just List Price)
