I run procurement for a 50-person industrial electrical maintenance company. Our test-equipment budget is around $80,000 a year, and I’ve been tracking every order for the past seven years—including the ones I’d rather forget. In the field, that means an electrician can carry one rugged meter and handle both continuity checks and insulation tests without going back to the van.

I also worked out calibration fees and inventory tracking. One combined unit costs more upfront, but for our team it reduced the number of missing testers and simplified calibration tracking. Before ordering, think about what you’ll actually point it at. If you’re checking small electronic components, the C5’s fixed focus and modest resolution will frustrate you. If you’re scanning distribution boards, motors, and cable trays, it’s a good first pass. I want to say the C5 was around $550–$650 as of January 2025, but don’t quote me on that—pricing moves. The 301D is a general-purpose AC/DC clamp meter. The DC function is the reason we bought one: we check solar string currents, DC drive circuits, and battery charging systems where an AC-only clamp meter is useless. If all your work is conventional AC, you can skip the DC version and save money. If there’s any chance you’ll be on a solar site, get the AC/DC version.

One thing I learned the hard way: in my first year, I focused on current range and ignored the safety rating. I still kick myself for that. Per IEC 61010-1, a CAT III meter is designed for distribution panel wiring, while CAT IV is rated for the utility service entrance. Verify the meter’s CAT rating against the circuit you’ll touch before you buy. I once ordered a clamp meter with a big current range and no CAT IV rating; it sat in a drawer because we couldn’t use it in our substation. A $420 mistake that a spec sheet would have prevented.

FLIR multimeter vs Fluke: which brand should I choose?

This question comes up whenever we ask for quotes, and my honest answer is: the question is too broad. Fluke makes excellent multimeters and has a calibration/service network that’s hard to beat. FLIR leads in thermal imaging, and some of their meters or clamp meters include that capability. If you’re comparing a specific FLIR multimeter to a specific Fluke multimeter, the deciding factors should not be the logos. They should be the functions you use daily, the CAT rating, and how quickly your local supplier can calibrate the unit.

For us, the answer is not “one brand for everything.” We own Fluke handhelds, Megger insulation and earth testers, a FLIR thermal camera, and other instruments where they fit a specific problem. I’d rather work with a specialist who knows their limits than a generalist who overpromises. The vendor who told us “thermal imaging is our strength; for high-voltage insulation testing, Megger is better” earned our trust. That’s the same reason I keep separate specialists in the toolbox. Procurement isn’t a brand loyalty contest—it’s matching the instrument to the hazard and the budget.
